What Happened Today?

Talking Technically:

Every Wednesday, Tom and Erin start the show off with important earnings announcements, economic news and developing news in the major markets. Today, Tom reported on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). According to Bloomberg: "The CPI managed only a 0.1 percent rise in the month with the year-on-year rate sinking 2 tenths to 2.0 percent. The core rate, which excludes food and energy, managed only a 0.2 percent monthly rise though the yearly rate, and this is the good news, rose 1 tenth to a slightly better-than-expected 1.8 percent." Regarding Retail Sales report: "Retail sales roughly hit expectations in October, slowing to a 0.2 percent monthly gain following September's revised 1.9 percent hurricane-related surge. Ex-auto sales managed only a 0.1 percent gain though two core readings both show respectable growth, at 0.3 percent each for ex-autos ex-gas and control group sales."

Guest Greg Morris: Greg Morris is the author of "Candlestick Charting Explained" and his well-known "Investing with the Trend". He is also the author of the "Dancing with the Trend" blog here on StockCharts.com. Greg really spent most of his time on the program discussing breadth and trading strategies. We highly recommend you check out the recording! You'll find the links at the bottom of this article.

Ten in Ten Before One: In this regular segment, Tom reviews ten charts in ten minutes with Erin's comments and comments from the Twitter "peanut gallery" peppered in there. Send in your symbol requests via Twitter (@mktwatcherslive) before the show and we'll try and add them. If we missed them this show, we have many of them in the queue for Monday. Symbols reviewed today:  AAPL, CHK, REMX, IBM, PDCO, UFS, BYD, IPGP, IJR and NKE.  You'll find all of the charts in the MarketWatchers LIVE ChartList, located at the top of the MarketWatchers blog homepage.

Chart Breakouts: Erin built on Greg's information about looking for stocks already in a great trend but breaking out further. She explained that by clicking on the "pre-defined scans" from your member dashboard, you'll see the first scan lists the stocks that have just made new 52-week highs. She saved it to a ChartList and then looked at them in CandleGlance.

Looking Forward:

Tune in tomorrow at 12:00p - 1:30p EST on 11/16 to hear Greg Schnell discuss P&F charting.
