Mailbag: Histogram, MACD and ChartCodes(Posted 20 September 2000) Q: How do I produce a MACD Histogram on SharpCharts?
A: The MACD Histogram has been a part of SharpCharts from day one. You don't need to do anything special to see it, just select "MACD" from the indicator list. The MACD Histogram is "built in" to the regular MACD display. The MACD Histogram equals MACD less the 9-day EMA of MACD. On some chart programs it is plotted as a histogram, on others as a line. SharpCharts automatically includes the MACD Histogram as an area plot on the same chart as the MACD itself. The chart below shows the SharpChart for BRCM with MACD and the MACD Histogram (the light blue area) at the top.
On this SharpChart, MACD is the thick black line and the 9-day EMA of MACD is the thinner red line. The blue shape is the MACD Histogram. For BRCM, MACD was above 20 in July 2000 and has been negative for the first two weeks of September. The MACD Histogram fluctuates above and below zero too, but much less than MACD. For BRCM, the MACD Histogram remained between +10 and -10 for the past few months. Cheers Q: Please restore my Favorite Charts. A: The good news is that we never delete you Favorite Charts from our database unless you tell us to. If your Favorite Charts "mysteriously" disappear all at once, it is most likely because the "cookie" that we stored inside of your web browser has been deleted for some reason. If you know your ChartCode, you can quickly restore your favorites list. Either select "Restore Your ChartCode" from the "Favorites" dropdown at the top of the SharpCharts page or select the "Restore Your ChartCode" link near the bottom of the page. Then enter your ChartCode in the popup dialog box that appears. This is also the way to use the same ChartCode on your home computer and your work computer. If, for some reason, you have lost your ChartCode (you did print it out, didn't you ;-), send us a message via our feedback form and we might be able to retrieve it for you. If you are continually losing your favorites list, make sure that you are closing down your browser successfully after each session and that you are not using some kind of cookie screening settings or programs that would prevent our cookie from "sticking."
